Deadhead miles: when driving empty is worth it
Updated October 2026
Deadhead is the miles you drive empty, usually to get to your next pickup. You burn fuel and time on those miles, but no one pays you for them, so they change what a load is really worth.
Use all-in rate per mile
Divide the load's pay by loaded miles plus deadhead miles. A load that pays well per loaded mile can look much worse once you add a long deadhead.
When deadhead pays off
Sometimes driving empty to a strong market sets up better loads for the rest of the week. Compare two loads side by side, including the deadhead, and think about where each one leaves you.
Plan your next load early
Look for your next load before you deliver. Booking a backhaul near your delivery point cuts deadhead and keeps your week moving.
Try it: Compare two loads
