How truck load boards work
Updated October 2026
A load board is an online marketplace where freight brokers and shippers post loads that need trucks, and carriers search for freight that fits their equipment, location and schedule. Most of the loads on public load boards are posted by brokers.
How booking works
You search by origin, destination, equipment type and date. When you find a load, you call or message the broker, talk through the details and negotiate the rate. If you agree, the broker sends a rate confirmation, and you'll need to be set up with that broker (your authority, insurance certificate and W-9) before pickup.
Posted rates are a starting point
Many posted loads list a rate, and many don't. Either way, the rate is usually negotiable. Know your cost per mile before you call, so you know your walk-away number.
Free vs. paid
Some load boards have free tiers or apps; paid plans usually add more loads, rate data, broker credit information and alerts. Many carriers use more than one.
